Power of the pen

Power of the Pen has come to AEA Lakewood!

Noah Deal and Leo Lubinski, two seventh-grade students, participated in this year's Power of the Pen creative writing competition alongside their ELA teacher, Mrs. Puma. The competition encourages seventh—and eighth-graders to discover and develop their distinctive voices through participation in district, regional, and state writing tournaments. Team members work with a mentor to prepare for their competition using the Book of Winners, which features the most compelling student writing from the previous season. During team practices, students engage in discussions about the writer’s craft and the impact of these stories written by their peers. Participation in Power of the Pen improves writing skills and confidence, enhances leadership abilities, and encourages teamwork.

Both students had a fantastic experience, scoring in the 80s and 90s for their written work. Leo and Noah formed a small but mighty team, competing against over twenty-two other local school districts, each with up to twelve students per team. Noah Deal achieved a score high enough to qualify for the regional tournament in March. We are incredibly proud of both the students and their hard work!

Please wish Noah luck as they prepare for Regionals!
